GM Goes Zero-Zero-Zero-Eight, Haters & Success
Well, well, well look who came crawling back to the Small Block V8…
By now, you know that every automotive manufacturer and government regulator is so far down the EV-or-bust path that there’s no going back. In fact, any organization that would be silly enough to even consider ICE development would be considered archaic at best. Maybe hybrid. We could see a big hybrid initiative, but never another run at ICE powertrain, right?
Not so fast my electron-lovin’ legions, as GM has just promised the unimaginable. Multiple sources are reporting that GM is going ICE in a big, big way. With an investment of $854M split between four powertrain plants (Flint, Bay City, Rochester, Defiance), GM confirms that trucks and SUVs in this country are going to be powered by petroleum products for the foreseeable future. They gave Gerald Johnson, GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability credit for the announcement.
For comparison, GM has promised $35 billion to be spent on EVs through 2025. Still, this tells us that the small block Chevy V8 lives on for a long, long time. If it’s in trucks and SUVs, that’s great, but this move also opens up the possibility for more high performance versions of the V8 as well. Here we go!
Pulling back a little bit, we are starting to see the true balance of the decade-long EV hype train. As EV, ICE, Hybrid, or something else (Hydrogen!), vie for market dominance, we now see that we are going to have multiple powertrain options for decades. If EV proponents can solve the inherent problems with this power source, it might be a winner. But, even EV advocates are hedging their bet on a future with multiple options for consumers.
What does this mean for you? If you have built a business or made a side hustle from the LS market, it looks like the good times are going to keep on coming. The LT evolution has continued the aftermarket love affair with the Chevy V8, and you can now breath easy knowing that you have years of raw material still coming from GM. Happy hunting at your favorite bone yard.
